If you're looking for somewhere to stay on your camping and caravan holidays in North Yorkshire, why not consider pitching here, at Shaw Ghyll Caravan and Camping, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
This is a small, privately run park accommodating caravans, motorhomes and tents, with 20 hardstanding pitches – and it is a level site. There are also a few statics and some seasonal pitches. Electric hook-ups are available. The on site amenities block has (metered) showers and toilets, as well as shaver points and hair dryers. There's a covered area for dishwashing and although there isn't a motorhome service point, there are chemical toilet and waste water disposal points.
The campsite is situated within a valley, surrounded by deciduous trees and with the sound of the shallow and bubbling Forsdale Beck, which ends up in the River Ure that flows through Wensleydale. It is made up of two areas: the first for a handful of small, static caravans and the second, made up of pitches for seasonal and touring caravans. Pitches are sited around the edge of an oval gravel access track, adjacent to the Beck and also inside the access track. Its sheltered and secluded location is really lovely, even if it lacks mod-cons.
The famous Buttertubs Pass winds its way up beyond the site, taking visitors up and over from Wensleydale to Swaledale; it really is a spectacular road – arguably one of the finest in Britain for touring. And the pretty village of Hardraw is within walking distance (with hiking boots), where you can visit the Green Dragon pub, full of character, an attractive café and art studios. Hardraw Waterfall (accessed through the pub) is impressive, but you can take a circular walk from the campsite, witnessing three further waterfalls along the way.
Shaw Ghyll Caravan and Camping is just a five-minute drive outside the village of Hawes, and from there you'll find good public transport links that will help you explore the area, with buses to Richmond and Leyburn, Sedburgh, Settle and Ingleton or Garsdale Station (for Leeds).
Pitch here on your camping and caravan holidays and being in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, there is so much to see and do and so many different ways to take in your amazing natural surroundings. There are plenty of opportunities for walkers of all abilities to enjoy themselves here, as well as many on and off road cycling trails, and mountain biking.
Pony trekking is a great way to see the area. Or why not try something more adventurous? How about fell running or caving, geocaching, orienteering, rock climbing, canoeing, windsurfing or sailing? All this and more before you leave the national park.
Of course, the Lake District National Park is also accessible from this campsite, Windermere, for example, only about an hour away by car. And to the east, but a touch further away, is the North York Moors National Park. About an hour away is the old market town of Kendal and if you need a bit of night life, Lancaster is just over an hour's drive away.
But really, a stay at Shaw Ghyll Caravan and Camping is all about this idyllic, tranquil setting, getting away from it all and enjoying the rich and varied natural environment on your camping and caravan holidays in the Yorkshire Dales.
